The Socialization Checklist
People
- Men with beards, hats, sunglasses
- Children of all ages
- Elderly people with canes or walkers
- People in uniform
- People with umbrellas or bicycles
Sounds
- Vacuum cleaner, hairdryer, blender
- Traffic, sirens
- Thunder and fireworks (via recordings)
- Children playing
Surfaces and Environments
- Gravel, sand, grass, wet surfaces
- Stairs and elevators
- Vet's office (positive visits with no procedures)
- Pet stores, outdoor cafes
Safe Socialization Before Full Vaccination
Carry your puppy to see the world without touching unknown surfaces. Visit vaccinated dogs only. Join a certified puppy class (acceptable after first vaccine). Avoid dog parks and high-risk areas until vaccine series is complete.
Fear Periods
First: 8-11 weeks. Second: 6-14 months. During fear periods, never force exposure to scary things. Create distance and pair the scary thing with treats at a comfortable distance.
