Dog Behavior Training Guide for Better Habits at Home

Fix the most common dog behavior problems at home — jumping, chewing, stealing, bolting — with positive, proven methods.

🧠 The Framework Every behavior fix follows: (1) Prevent rehearsal, (2) Teach an incompatible behavior, (3) Reward the alternative generously.

Stop Jumping Up

Ignore jumping completely — no eye contact, no pushing, no talking. The instant four paws hit the floor, give enthusiastic attention. Ask for sit as an incompatible behavior. Every family member must respond identically — every time.

Counter Surfing

Management first: never leave food accessible. Counter surfing is self-reinforcing — one success in 100 attempts keeps the behavior going. Additionally teach "leave it" to apply to all horizontal surfaces.

Destructive Chewing

Provide appropriate outlets (rotating variety of chew toys), increase exercise, use crate/confinement when unsupervised. Interrupt and redirect calmly — no punishment. If only happens during absence, see Separation Anxiety Guide.

Door Bolting

Teach "wait" at every threshold. Dog must hold position until released. Build this by cracking the door — if dog moves toward it, door closes. Door only opens (reward) when dog holds position. Practice at every door in your home.
